The University of Oxford is one of the oldest established Universities in the world, and was ranked 1st, in the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Research activity takes place in over 70 departments and involves more than 1,800 academic staff, more than 5,000 research and research support staff, and more than 5,600 graduate research students. Researchers from UOXF participated in >700 projects during FP7 (2007-2013). Oxford is involved in 333 Horizon 2020 projects. Of these 78 are ERC grants, 109 are MSCA Individual Fellowships and 146 are collaborative projects including MSCA ITNs and IAPPs. The Department of Physics is involved with 42 projects: 7 ERC, 13 MSCA IFs and 22 collaborative projects (incl MSCA ITNs and IAPPs). Presently, the University is rapidly growing in the area of sustainable energy and thin-film materials across all divisions. Over the last 10 years the mathematical, physical and life sciences (MPLS) division has made eight new permanent appointments in the area of Energy, one of which is Prof. Henry J. Snaith, and an additional 4 appointments in thin film materials.
